Meet Dr Jos Myburgh

MBChB (UFS) ; MMed Urol (UFS); FC Urol (SA); Diploma in Urologic laparoscopic surgery (University of Strasbourg); Fellowship in Urologic laparoscopic surgery (Belgian Laparoscopic Urologic Group).

Dr Myburgh is a specialist urological surgeon with an interest in Urologic Oncology, Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery, Endourology and Male urology. After completing his undergraduate and post graduate studies at the University of the Free State, he spent five years working as a consultant and lecturer at the Department of Urology at Universitas Academic Hospital as well as the University of the Free State. He gained valuable experience in various complicated Urologic conditions and surgeries with a special focus on research, clinical management and surgeries in the field of urologic oncology. He served on the Urology-Oncology multidisciplinary team for the duration of this period and still serves as the Free State branch chairman of the prostate cancer foundation of South Africa. He was part of the organising committee and the academic program director at the recently concluded South African Urologic Association (SAUA) congress in Bloemfontein in 2022. He also serves on the Free State panel for renal transplantation and the Urologic college of medicine in South Africa (CMSA) as a council member and examiner.

His passion for minimally invasive surgery developed as he recognised the need to reduce the often significant impact on recovery of patients after the surgeries often needed in the field of uro-oncology. Together with developing a laparoscopic program in the department, he also started the first ERAS (enhanced recovery after surgery) clinical guideline in the department. His passion for laparoscopic surgery resulted in a renewed interest in reconstructive and functional areas of urology like living donor nephrectomy for kidney transplant, female pelvic reconstruction, kidney and ureteral reconstruction, laparoscopic varicocelectomy and management of intra-abdominal testes. He has undergone specialised training in laparoscopic surgery with the Belgian Laparoscopic Urologic group and has also obtained a diploma in Laparoscopic Urologic surgery at the University of Strasbourg.
